SENATE PASSES AMTRAK FUNDING
The full Senate approved the night of Oct 20 the full amount of $1.45 billion FY2006 appropriation for Amtrak, which had previously been set in committee. This was part of a larger Transportation/ Treasury/ HUD bill. Also, language was struck from the bill, which would have micromanaged Amtrak's diner and sleeper operations and made services less attractive to passengers, thus resulting in lower patronage. The next step is for the bill to move to a House-Senate conference committee to adjust the difference between the Senate version and the House version, which has only $1.17 billion for Amtrak. Also, soon the Senate may take up S.1516, the important
Lott-Lautenberg reauthorization bill, also known as the Passenger Rail
Investment and Improvement Act.
AMTRAK RIDERSHIP: THIRD YEAR OF RECORD PATRONAGE Amtrak announced that in FY2005 just ended it had counted 25,374,998 passengers, for the third straight year of record ridership. Most impressive was that this happened in spite of major disruptions to service due to hurricanes and the down time of the Acela high-speed trains. The full report along with detailed route-by-route figures can be found on the Amtrak site at this link.
STARLIGHT TO RUN OVER TEHACHAPI ROUTE ONE TIME The Coast Starlight, southbound train 11, will run from Sacramento to Los Angeles via Bakersfield and Tehachapi on Sunday, Oct 23. Tickets should be available now. The rare routing was caused by Amtrak President Gunn's private car being on the rear of the train and needing to reach Los Angeles. Normal service between Oakland and San Jose on the route is disrupted due to track work, and buses have been substituted for that portion. Leaving Sacramento, the train will run on
the normal San Joaquin route (BNSF) to Bakersfield, then on the UP (ex-SP)
to Palmdale, and via Metrolink into L.A. Union Station.
