SENATE COMMITTEE ADDS $50 MILLION TO AMTRAK FUNDING

   The full Senate Appropriations Committee on July 21 approved its subcommittee's Amtrak budget and added $50 million to Amtrak funding, to bring the total to $1.45 billion.

   On the negative side, the bill at this point still includes the requirement that Amtrak break even on dining service and possibly prohibits Amtrak from using sleeping cars and lounge cars.



CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR TO BE HIT WITH DETOURS IN LATE SUMMER AND FALL

   Amtrak trains 5&6, the California Zephyr, will be forced to detour away from their scenic Colorado Rockies route on a number of weeks between August 31 and November 4 because of track work being done by Union Pacific.

  The work, between Bond and Palisade, Colorado, will occur on alternate weeks. Listed here are the origin dates for trains that will follow the normal route:

 AUGUST 30 AND BEFORE
- ORIGIN DATES SEPTEMBER 8 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 14
- ORIGIN DATES SEPTEMBER 23 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 29
- ORIGIN DATES OCTOBER 8 THROUGH OCTOBER 14
- ORIGIN DATES OCTOBER 23 THROUGH OCTOBER 30
- ORIGIN DATES NOVEMBER 4 AND AFTER.

   The detour will take the trains across Wyoming on the UP, the route followed before the Colorado route became available about 20 years ago.



CALIFORNIA TRAINS REACH MORE RIDERSHIP RECORDS

  The following was reported by the Rail Passenger Association of California:

Here are the ridership and revenue results from Amtrak for June 2005, and, once again, they are UP! 

Capitol Corridor:
      108,797 passengers +7.9% vs. FY04 and another monthly record!
      $1,211,777 ticket revenue +15.4% vs. FY04

Pacific Surfliner:
      217,144 passengers +8.3% vs. FY04 and a record for the month!
      $3,409,949 ticket revenue +10.3% vs. FY04

San Joaquins:
      69,520 passengers +6.1% vs. FY04
      $2,001,236 ticket revenue +11.5% vs. FY04



SENATE SUBCOMMITTEE OKAYS $1.4 BILLION FOR AMTRAK
  DOT WANTS TO CUT OUT SLEEPING CAR, DINER, LOUNGE AND CHECKED BAGGAGE SERVICE ON AMTRAK TO SAVE MONEY.
