Modern Trains and Splendid Stations: Architecture, Design, and Rail Travel for the Twenty-First Century

STARLIGHT TO EMPIRE BUILDER CONNECTION ENDED

Effective August 13, Amtrak no longer provides a connection between the northbound Coast Starlight, train 14, and the eastbound Empire Builder, train 28, at Portland OR. Instead, a dedicated Thruway bus will run between Klamath Falls OR and Pasco WA for passengers needing the connection.

The reason for the change was poor Starlight timekeeping caused by Union Pacific problems.

The new bus, #3014, leaves Klamath Falls at 9:15am (holding for train 14 if necessary), making a stop at Chemult OR to pick up passengers only, and reaching Pasco at 8:15pm.
The bus will make a meal stop, and free bottled water will be given to passengers.

DOWNEASTER FUNDING IS ASSURED

The state of Maine will be able to continued its funding of the Amtrak Downeaster train, which runs between Portland ME and Boston, thanks to passage of  the $286 billion highway-transit reauthorization bill. The train receives up to $6 million per year from the state, which will be able to continue using an 80% federal matching grant to pay it.

PIONEER ROUTE REINSTATEMENT REQUESTED IN LOTT BILL

The Lott-Lautenberg Amtrak authorization bill to be voted upon in the Senate in September after the August recess contains the following language calling for a study of returning the Pioneer train route. That train, discontinued in the 1990s, ran from Seattle to Los Angeles via Las Vegas and Boise:

"Within two years after the date of enactment of this Act, Amtrak shall conduct a 1-time evaluation of the Pioneer Route, using the
methodologies adopted under [this Act], whether a level of passenger demand exists that would warrant consideration of reinstating of the entire Pioneer Route service or segments of that service." -- Section 207(e)
