MORE ON THE BLUE WATER

The photo above shows the first revenue run of Amtrak's original Blue Water train. It is leaving Chicago on Sunday, September 15, 1974.

The train is powered by a single Penn Central engine, Penn Central unrefurbished snack bar coach from the Northeast Corridor, and three refurbished Amtrak coaches.

In 1974 Amtrak owned hand-me-down equipment from the railroads that had joined it, and some of the equipment had received mainly cosmetic refurbishing, including interior colors of blue, purple and red that were considered garish by many riders.

The photo was made by Jack Ferry, and is copyright 1974 and 2004 by Message Media.

On April 24, 2004 Amtrak will inaugurate its Blue Water train between Chicago and Port Huron MI. Essentially, the new operation eliminates the Canadian portion of the International train.
